Dear Parents and Carers,

unfortunately we arrived at school this morning to find out that once again we had received uninvited visitors over the weekend!

Our Forest was targeted again and this was trashed.

The shed that we use to store our grass-cutting tractor in had once again been vandalised, this time the lock had been sheared off, a window smashed, a panel of the shed ripped off, the attachments for the grass-cuttings bag ripped off the back of the tractor a, the bonnet cracked and damaged, tobacco and litter also deposited in the shed.

School budgets are stretched to the limit at the moment and this damage has a huge impact on our school.

Firstly, I would like to ask if anyone saw anything suspicious or has any information regarding this incident to please let me know.

Secondly, I would like to ask if anyone is upgrading their CCTV or knows anyone that could donate any CCTV equipment to us to please can you let me know.

Weekly News For Families – 27.01.23

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is great when children represent the our school at different events. There have been a couple of sporting events this week where some of children have worn their Yapton Crowns with pride!

Our School Netball Team took part in a tournament at The Regis School on Tuesday. Mrs Horrex and Mrs Dean were both very proud of the team’s efforts, behaviour and sportsmanship. Well done to Jessica, Zack, Eva, Ella, Amelia, Luca, Katie, Sydney and Alys for showing such brilliant teamwork winning three of their games against other local schools.

On Wednesday, our Year 5 and 6 Running Club took part in an Inter-Schools Cross-Country race held at Bishop Luffa School in Chichester. The course around the school field got muddier and muddier throughout the afternoon, but everyone did fantastically well to get round. Mr Coyle, Mrs Emery-Winter and Mrs Diggens were very proud again in the way children from our school conducted themselves. Well dome to Lilli, Bethany, Freddie, Luca, Evan, Marley, Harry , Zack, Sofia, Alys, Maisie, Toni and Dylan. A special mention needs to go to Lilli, who did so well finishing 9th out of over 70 runners in her race. She has been invited to take part in the County Cross-Country Event in a few weeks time.

Chichester Corporate Challenge

The Running Club are now turning their attention to the Chichester Corporate Challenge which is a series of 3 races in Chichester in March. As well as races for children, there are also races for adults to take part in. This year, it would be great to have a ‘Yapton Team’ made up of staff, governors and parents. So here is a call out to any runners…! The races are on three Wednesday evenings in March: the 1st, 15th and 29th. The course is four laps of the streets in Chichester and is about 4.5km long. There is a race entry fee of £17 (for all three races). Keeping The Bugs Away

We are are seeing a number of days where there are a significant number of children off school due to different sickness and other bugs that seem to be around the moment. Here at school, we are continuing to insist on good hygiene routines – regular hand washing and sanitising as well as catch coughs in tissues which then get bagged and binned. Please can we encourage you to follow practices at home to help keep the school as germ-free as possible!

Keeping Safe

Please can I remind you as long as we have had confirmation from you, we allow our children in Years 5 and 6 to make their own way to school and/or back home . However, this does not mean they can be responsible for any younger siblings as well.

Contacting The School

We are currently having problems with our phone lines in school. The issues have been identified and are going to be repaired but until then, please can you use either the messaging service through ParentMail or the office@yaptonschool.org email address as much as possible. Obviously, if a phone call is needed, please do this but please be patient if the probelms with the line persist.

Goodbye Mrs Lawson

Today we said goodbye to Mrs Lawson who is moving on from our school to ventures new. We thank her very much for all her hard work which has always been done with a friendly smile in the office and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Dear Parents and Carers,

this time last week 46 of our KS2 children were sat in the O2 Arena in London preparing to sing at the Young Voices Concert with 9,000 other children. One of the many highlights was singing ‘Proud’ with the artist Heather Small. We were excited to learn that this recording is to be used as the focus song for Children’s Mental Health Week 2023 with the charity ‘Place 2 Be’. Thank you to all of the families who supported this adventure.


Whilst ‘energy’ drinks are fast becoming popular, most recently due to the PRIME drink made famous by KSI, they are not allowed in school. Children who buy energy drinks and bring them into school will be offered water as an alternative and the energy drink returned to them at the end of the school day.


Mrs Horrex, Mrs Green and Mrs Groves would like to invite families of children in Y4 to a special workshop on Monday 6th February at 3.00pm. They will explain the test and how it works. They will also advise as to how you can support your child in preparation for this. It is a statutory requirement for children in Y4 as set by the Department For Education. They will be held in your child’s classroom.


Just a gentle reminder that tomorrow is our ‘Book Share’ event in the school hall at the end of the school day. It really is a wonderful opportunity to change your books for free!

Weekly News for Families – 13.01.23

Dear Parents and Carers,

Another busy week of learning has flown by! In our THINK Worship this afternoon it was lovely to hear how the children are showing the values of Truth, Honesty, Inspiration, Necessity and Kindness. One of regular visiting teachers commented on the strong sense of kindness and support the children show towards each other.

Year 6

Well done to our Year 6 children who have worked extremely hard during a special ‘Test Your Knowledge Week’ where they have had a chance to experience what the end of Key Stage 2 SATS tests will be like. This year’s tests are in May, which seems quite far off, but they will come around quite quickly. With this in mind, the weekly timetables for Arundel, Bodiam and Cowdray classes will be changed so that the Year 6 children can have some focussed revision sessions on a couple of afternoons a week, whilst the Year 5 children can continue their learning as normal.

A revised P.E. timetable for the whole school is attached.


As part of the revision process, the Year 6 children will be bringing some home learning tasks to be completed. These will be in addition to the normal expectations of regular reading, spelling practice and spending some time on Times Tables Rock Stars which all of the children have. The teachers also enjoy seeing what home learning tasks the children choose to do from the menu of challenges. These have a ‘Creative’ theme for this half term. The Home Learning expectations for EYFS and Year 1, Year 2, Years 3 and 4 as well as Years 5 and 6 are attached.

Additional Spring Term Key Dates

Here is a list of some exciting sporting events that are going to be happening over the next few weeks:

  • Tuesday 24th January – Netball Tournament (children from the Year 5/6 Netball Club will be taking part)

  • Wednesday 25th January – Cross Country Running Race (children from the Year 5/6 Running Club will be taking part)

  • Tuesday 31st January – Year 3/4 60 Active Minutes Festival

  • Wednesday 8th February – Year 1 Infant Agility

  • Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th February – Whole School Skateboard and Scooter Experience

  • Wednesday 22nd March – Inter-School Swimming Gala

    Further details about each of these events will be sent to those involved at the appropriate times.

    Parking near the school

    Please can you be considerate to our neighbours if you use your car on the school run. We have received an email from Dandara with some photographs of cars blocking pavements and access in Roemead Drive.

    Young Voices

    Forty-six Key Stage 2 children are really looking forward to taking part in the Young Voices concert at the 02 Arena on Monday. They have been practicing hard throughout the Autumn Term. Singing as part of a 7,500-strong children’s choir is going to be an amazing experience!

Young Voices – Arena details and travel sickness

Dear Parents and Carers,

I have attached a plan of the 02 Arena to show where the children will be sitting in relation to where you will be.

Also, if you haven’t already indicated on the medical form that your child suffers from travel sickness, can you please let me know through the office2@yaptonschool.org email address providing details of what medication your child will need to take. On the day of the concert, please make sure any travel sickness medication for the journey up to London has been taken at home before coming to school. The medication for the journey back to school will need to be brought in its original packaging with clear dosage instructions and be given to Mrs Browning or Mrs Dean at the beginning of the school day.

Young Voices Concert – the arrangements for the day

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to those of you who have already completed the medical form. Please can any outstanding form be completed by midday on Tuesday 12th January.

Here are all the details regarding the Young Voices concert at the 02 Arena on Monday 16th January.


The children need to come to school at the normal time. They need to be wearing the Young Voices t-shirt they will be bringing home in the next couple of days along with plain dark tracksuit bottoms, their school jumper and trainers. It may be worth washing the t-shirt so that it feels comfortable to wear. An additional plain white long sleeved top may be worthwhile for the rehearsal as it the large Arena isn’t always that warm. A light-weight coat would be useful.

The children will need to bring enough food to keep them going throughout the day. So a packed lunch and packed tea along with a few extra snacks will be needed. A water bottle along with some other drinks (no fizz please) will also be essential. The children will need to bring all of these in a rucksack.

We will be travelling to and from the Arena by coach. We will leave during the morning so that we are there for the afternoon rehearsal. After the concert, we will all be travelling back to school on the coach (which I think may be rather quiet!). We should be back at school between 11:00pm and midnight. Our estimated time of arrival will be sent out on ParentMail once we are on our way.


Please make sure you can access your downloaded tickets on your phone. If you have still not accessed your tickets from the email from AXS, please do so soon. If you are having problems with this, please let me know immediately so that any issues can be sorted out.

The concert starts at 7:00pm but the doors to the Arena open at 6:00pm. Taking a small pair of binoculars would be a good idea, if you want to get a good view of your child. Look out for our school banner which the children will be making over the next few days.

Obviously, the children are going to very tired after a long and exciting day. We are expecting them back in school the next day – however, we will extend the morning registration for the children and their siblings until 10:30am if you would find this helpful. Otherwise, we will expect to see the children at the normal time.


We have been invited to make a contribution towards Fair Share – a charity network aimed at relieving food poverty and reducing food waste. If you would like to make a donation, please include a tinned or boxed product in your child’s rucksack on the day of the concert. The donations will be collected as the children make their way to the Arena.

The school is extremely thankful for a grant from the BlueSpark Foundation which has been used to cover the vast majority of the cost of enabling the children to take part in this event.

Dear Parents and Carers,

we have had a busy first week back at school!


From flying eggs to saving the planet to fire and smoke – what an exciting way to launch our learning! In our Worship on our first day at back at school we met together to celebrate the new year and share our learning for the half term.

Olivia M and Bertie R told us all about the campfire in the forest, the red and orange disco lights and the re-enactment of the Great Fire of London.

Maisie S and Alex T explained how they had been ‘rubbish detectives’ over the Christmas Holidays and now were writing pledges of responsibility, taking action to save our planet.

Lola B and Chloe S solved the ‘flying eggs’ mystery by detailing the experiment that they had carried out.


I have attached the prayer for January. This prayer was written by Sydney in Y6 which reflects her thoughts about the worries of the winter season.

We send our warmest wishes to Miss Emery who married Mr Winter in a beautiful ceremony in the Christmas Holidays. Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Emery-Winter.

Congratulations to Mr Coyle who became engaged to his partner on New Year’s Eve. We wish them both lots of love.
